Climate Change Backgrounders (Intermediate)

There are three Intermediate Climate Change Backgrounders, designed to introduce intermediate students to climate change. They cover these three basic areas:

  • The Basics describes climate change, its causes and scientific research on the subject
  • The Impacts shows how climate change is affecting the planet –particularly the north
  • The Solutions shows how we can reduce GHG emissions and slow climate change

To choose backgrounders for your class, read the outline below, then click on the links.

Basics

1. Climate Change Basics: What’s the Big Deal?

  • Climate change basics – how it works
  • The greenhouse effect – how the atmosphere traps heat
  • Greenhouse gases – what they are, what they do
  • Why the north’s temperatures are expected to increase more than elsewhere

Impacts

2. Climate Change Impacts: A Changing World?

  • Changes in northern landscapes: permafrost, wetlands
  • Impacts on northern plants and animals
  • Impacts on northern communities
  • Impacts on the world

Solutions

3. Climate Change Solutions: We can all help!
