Jack Hulland Elementary: Eco-Challenge for Primary Students

Teacher: Ellen Johnson
Grade: 1

Project details

During the Earth Week competition, Mrs. Johnson's class did the following:

  • Participated in the Lights Off activity and tracked their energy use over a 2-week period. During Earth Week, Mrs. Johnson's class had the lights off almost all day, especially on Earth Day. On Earth Day they only had the lights on for 1 hour.
  • Made fridge magnets.
  • Students completed the Conservation in My Home activity with their families where they monitored and looked at the waste and energy in their homes.
  • Created Eco-Bookmarks with beautiful images and reminders of what they will do for the environment.
  • Completed an on-line environmental story/program called The Magical Thread.
  • The students were given Green Rewards for conservation they did in their home. Students reported back to the class on what they were doing in the home.
  • Students made something out of an object or materials they would normally throw out at home.
  • This grade 1 class did cardboard recycling for the entire school.
  • On Earth Day they talked about reduce, reuse and recycle with their classes. The students came up with ideas they could such as:

    • rent a video instead of buying it.
    • take out a library book.
